Mowbray Sacked

Tony+Mowbray+Watford+v+Middlesbrough+npower+ymb_2JYQZxKlMiddlesbrough have parted company with manager, Tony Mowbray with immediate effect.

Assistant Manager, Mark Venus will now take temporary charge of the club for Friday’s game against Doncaster Rovers and until further notice.

A poor start to the season matched with the club’s overall form in 2013 has lead to Steve Gibson releasing the former Middlesbrough player of his managerial duties at the club.

Middlesbrough have won just two league fixtures so far this season and Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to struggling Barnsley has proved to be a bad result to many for Gibson the Chairman and his board of directors.

Saturday’s loss to Barnsley leaves the Boro in 16th place with 12 points from a possible 36 points in 12 games this season.  At home, Boro have won just five league games in 2013 matched with a record of just one win on the road since the turn of the year and that is still yet to improve this campaign with the Boro winning just one game at home and one game away since the the start of the new season.

Chairman, Steve Gibson stated that a top six finish was the minimum requirement this season with the football clubs final parachute payment already paid it would make next season very restricting financially on the club.  With the team averaging a point a game so far, a fact often regarded as relegation form especially in the Championship has led to Steve Gibson deciding to call time on Mowbray’s reign at the Riverside Stadium, something which was no doubt hard decision to make considering the pair of been friends since their teenage years.

Gibson is understood to already be in the hunt for Mowbray’s predecessor and an announcement is expected to be made sooner rather than later with Tony Pulis and former Real Madrid assistant manager, Aitor Karanka emerging as the early favorites with the majority of the bookmakers.

Mowbray has already received many messages of support from Middlesbrough fans, who still see the Saltburn-born man as a Legend from his playing days as captain at the club and are still wishing him all the best for the future. Mowbray has a host of clubs to his name already in his managerial career but this already the second club he has been sacked by, after a run of bad results as manager of Celtic resulted in him being axed before his time in charge at the Riverside Stadium.

The club has issued a statement saying, “The club would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Tony Mowbray for all of his substantial efforts, dedication and integrity. He leaves with the very best wishes of all at the club.”
